Doris Lenore Anderson, 97, Minot, formerly of Long Prairie and Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in a Minot assisted living center.
Doris was born September 12, 1919, to Edward and Emma (Starr) Haugerud in Balfour, North Dakota. When she was four months old, the family moved to a farm near Pelican Rapids, MN where she spent her childhood years. She attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science and Home Economics in 1942. Over the years, her teaching experiences included home economics, science, girls' physical education and high school special education which was nearest and dearest to her heart.
In 1950, Doris wanted a break from teaching and got a job at Fargo Paint and Glass in Fargo, ND. It was there that she met and was later united in marriage to Melvin Anderson on January 6, 1951. They spent most of their married years in Long Prairie, Minnesota. They also lived briefly in Moorhead, MN before moving to Minot in 2004 to be closer to their daughter and her family. They were married for fifty four years until Melvin's death on June 23, 2006. Doris was most recently a resident of the Brookdale (formerly Brentmoor) Assisted Living Center.
Doris had a zest for learning and a keen interest in many things. Some of her hobbies and interests included stamp collecting, coin collecting, metal detecting, playing bridge, going to garage sales and playing golf. She was able to play eighteen holes of golf last spring at the age of 96. She also loved books, and, at the age of 96, was inspired to write her own book, an autobiography of her life which is greatly treasured by her family.
Sewing was one of Doris's main interests. She had many sewing and quilting projects over the years and, most recently, greatly enjoyed a quilting group at her church. Some of her favorite projects were making "Johnny" shirts and lap robes for Veteran's hospitals, pillowcase dresses for Africa and Quilts for Kids.
Playing the piano was Doris's greatest source of enjoyment and relaxation. Through the years, she has blessed many people with her playing at churches, nursing homes and, most recently, for both Protestant and Catholic services at Brookdale which she did for 14 years. She especially enjoyed playing piano duets with her daughter. She worked very diligently at the piano because, in her words, her left hand was a "complete dud." Until just recently, it was her goal to practice an hour every day.
Doris was a kind and thoughtful friend and would give a warm smile and cheery hello to everyone. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. A special memory for her grandchildren and great grandchildren will always be the many games of hide and seek she played with them.
Her loving family includes:
daughter, Sheryl (Richard) Haugeberg, Max, ND; 3 grandchildren, Wade (Cristy) Haugeberg, West Fargo, ND, Chad Haugeberg, Arlington, TX, Kristy Haugeberg (Thomas Sawyer), Phoenix, AZ; 8 great grandchildren, Bryce, Jake, Rylie and Tessa Haugeberg, and Easton, Chloie, Caylee and Elijah Haugeberg; several nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin, her brothers Marion, Curtis, and Neil and her sister, Ellen.
