Obituary

Donald Stephen Haberman, 80, Minot died on Sunday March 17, 2013 at Care Source Hospice in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Don was born on September 20, 1932 in Bottineau, ND to Stephen and Lorraine (Jones) Haberman. He was reared and educated in Elgin, ND. Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy on December 5, 1950. He served his country on the Destroyer Escort USS McGinty, stationed out of Hawaii, during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on May 16, 1954. During this time he received the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with three stars, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Following his discharge he returned to North Dakota where he met the loving, beautiful and devoted Madonna Sedone Duff. They were married on October 13, 1956 in Willow City, ND. They made their home in Minot where they raised six children. Don was employed as the office manager of Minot Implement for twenty years and as a real estate agent for Signal Realtors until he retired in December of 2009. Even though, Don and Madonna had resided in their friendly hometown in North Dakota for almost all of their lives, they had been residing, for the past seven months, in the scenic Wasatch Mountains of Utah because of the healthcare complications of he and his wife. While there, he helped care for Madonna, who died on December 9, 2012.

Don was an active member of St. Leo's Catholic Church of Minot and became a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus organization and also served as a Grand Knight. He was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman. He fondly shared those experiences with his sons, brothers, grandchildren and nephews. He loved storytelling and brought cheer to the lives of those who listened. Don played tenor saxophone in a Navy recruit band. He was a devoted son who loved helping his parents with their farming and eventually formed a partnership with his brothers and farmed with them for many years. He especially enjoyed taking his children on tractor rides through the farm fields.

Together he and Madonna enjoyed countless hours of gardening, spending time with their children and entertaining their 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered as "Baby Blue Eyes" with an infectious smile by those who cared for him at his hospice home.

Don's loving family includes his children: Doug (Lori) Haberman of Woodbury MN, Pam Haberman of Minot, Mary (Peter) Cano of Highland UT, Mark (Renae) Haberman of Rapid City SD, Steve (Lorri) Haberman of Minot, and Kathy (Adam) Lamb of Bothell WA; grandchildren: Joshua Haberman, Elizabeth Weltzin, Maria Haberman, Caleb Haberman, Benjamin Haberman, Christopher Seiffert, Brock Goossens, Julian Degenstein, Tatiana Johnson, Courtney Pappas, Pete Cano, Nicole and David Haberman, Katelyn, Carson and Chayse Haberman; Dak, Praire and Iris Lamb; siblings: Tom (Helen) Haberman of Williston, Delmar (Rita) Haberman of Bottineau; in-laws: Pauline (Al) Waltz of Auburn WA, Tom (Leola) Hanson of Minot, Ray (Steph) Duff of St. Michael MN and Audrey Duff of Aurora CO and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dad, you will be greatly missed, and we will always hold you in our loving hearts.
