Delbert Torno, 91, Minot and formerly of Upham died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Trinity Hospital in Minot. His loving family was at his side.
Delbert Earl was born on May 22,1930 on a farm near Upham, ND to Walter and Anna (Flath) Torno. He attended school in Upham and eventually obtained a GED during his time in California. He worked with his father on the family farm until 1965. Then, he worked on the General Motors car assembly line in Huntington Beach, CA, and became an avid Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers fan. He moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1988 where he worked for the Las Vegas Convention Center and US Census Bureau. He won many awards for his excellent service and a special award for 30 years of service from the Las Vegas Convention Center. During his time in Las Vegas, he enjoyed working at special events, eating at the casino buffets, fraternizing with staff and betting on sporting events. Even when his health began to fail, he continued to work at events in whatever capacity he could manage.
Delbert moved to Minot, ND in August of 2020 and made his home at Somerset Court. He enjoyed playing card games and made many new friends, despite the pandemic.
Delbert never married or had children, but he was a devoted uncle to his many nieces and nephews, but especially adored his nieces. Although he was frugal, he was very generous with his great nieces and great nephews sending them cards on their special days. Delbert would often say that the Lord had blessed him with 91 good years, and he certainly made the most of his time on earth with his unique personality and zest for life.
Delbert was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Upham and continued to attend services, whenever possible, throughout his life. Delbert passed away on June 22 nd which was the same day that he was baptized in 1930.
Delbert is survived by his sister Marlys Bauer, 12 nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sisters: Lillian Torgerson, Eileen Hance, and Betty Skinn Schweyen, his nephew Jeff Torno and his niece Kelly Haugen.
