Darrell Bernsdorf , 92, Minot, formally of Sawyer, ND, died Thursday, November 22, 2018, at his home.
Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot. A memorial service will be held later in the spring, 2019, at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Visitation will be Monday, November 26, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot, ND; Bothun-Peterson American Legion Post # 213, Sherwood, ND; Our Savior's Free Lutheran Church, Stanley, ND; or to the donor's choice. Darrell was born February 11, 1926, in Sherwood to Fred and Florence (Sorenson) Bernsdorf.
He attended Sherwood Public School, graduating in May, 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, July, 1944 serving until July, 1946. As a World War II Veteran, he was proud to be invited to participate in the Roughrider Honor Flight to Washington D.C. 2010. He was also a member of the Bothun-Peterson Post # 213 at Sherwood for 72 years. After the war he attended Minot State University graduating with a BS Degree May, 1951.
He married Clarice Louise Jacobson, August 19, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, ND.
He accepted a teaching position in Martin, ND and later accepted a position in Sawyer, teaching a total of 25 years. He was employed by the U.S. Government as a Rural Mail Carrier out of Sawyer –Velva for 30 years.
Darrell was very community oriented. He served on the Sawyer City Council, the school board, Special Education Board, held several positions at St. Peter's Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Sawyer Lions Club receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot, for 19 years. He participated in many church activities and especially enjoyed the Bible study classes.
Darrell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, coach and friend. Many students continue to contact him to keep in touch with "Coach."
Survivors include: his wife, Clarice; daughter, Jill (Robert Nohr); grandchildren, Todd (Selina) Nohr & children, Remington, Colt and Tawni; Misty (Jason) Zuchara & children, Liberty, Logan (Tibbs) & Layanna; Savannah (Stephen) Elkins & children, Grady, Lolly and Mack; McKenzie (Adam) Jarmin & Liza Jill; Darlene Bernsdorf, sister-in-law; Steve & Linda Karpyak – brother-in-law & sister-in-law; nieces and nephews – Cheryl & Terry Miller, Lynn & Carol DesLauriers; Joan, Denise & Laurie DesLauriers; Jacquelyn & Robert Field, Reon & Jackie Bernsdorf; Terry & Karen Bernsdorf; Carol & Ron Boen; Penni King; Freddie Bernsdorf; Cousin, Larry Stewart; Tim & Karin Christianson & family; Anya Katrine Karpyak; many great nieces and nephews.
Darrell was preceded in death by his son, Steven Kermit Bernsdorf; parents, Fred & Florence (Sorenson) Bernsdorf; siblings, Vivian (Louis) DesLauriers; Howard and Curt Bernsdorf; Gail (Ken) Curle; nephews, Kevin and Vaughn Bernsdorf; great-nephew, Bobby Field; great-nieces, Cheryl and Natalie Olson; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Kermit & Elsie (Emmel) Jacobson; sister-in-law, Jean (Jacobson) and John Christianson & children, Greg & Jackie (Christianson) Tangedal.
