Obituary

Clayton LeRoy Schreiber, 85, Minot, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 in a Minot nursing home.

Clayton was born August 3, 1929, in Motley, Minnesota to William and Lucy (Clayton) Schreiber. He grew up and was educated in the country setting of Motley and the White Earth Indian Reservation, which instilled the values of giving and being a good neighbor his entire life.

Clayton left his childhood home to enlist in the US Army, where he was trained as a mechanic. While in the Army, he served at many posts domestic and abroad, including Japan and Korea. After many years of service in the Army, Clayton had the opportunity to re-enlist in the US Air Force.

While stationed at the Minot AFB, Clayton met Carolyn Wentz, who would become the love of his life. Clayton and Carolyn were united in marriage on May 31st, 1961 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, ND. After a brief assignment to Warren AFB in California, Clayton and Carolyn returned to Minot where they would remain. After 20 years of military service, Clayton retired from the Air Force and began a career in the Civil Service. He would dedicate another 20 years to the Civil Service until retiring in 1989.

Clayton was a dedicated family man, a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Minot Retired Military Association. Clayton was known by all who knew him to be a good neighbor, a good friend and someone that you could count on in time of need. Often you didn't need to ask. He was just there when you needed him. In retirement Clayton occupied his time with fishing, gardening, and tinkering with small engines. Everyone in the neighborhood knew to take their broken mowers, tillers, and other small engines to Clayton. Before long, the neighbors were referring other people. He never turned anyone away and he always told them, "I will get to it when I can". More often than not, Clayton had a wrench in his hand before they got back into their car. Clayton spent his winters praying for snow so that he could spend the day blowing out, not just his walks and driveway, but also the whole block. In the spring he made sure that all the neighborhood gardens were tilled in time for planting. And without a doubt, summer was reserved for fishing.

The Schreiber family would like to thank all of the many friends, neighbors, extended family and professionals who provided companionship, support and care over the years. A special thanks is extended to all at Somerset Court and Manor Care Nursing Home, who cared for Clayton in his final days.

Clayton is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carol Schreiber, Minot; daughters, Colette (Arno) Rudolph, Bismarck, ND, Cheryl (Daniel) Haugen, Lynden, WA and Charlotte Sommerfeld, Portland, OR; sons, Chuck (LaDonna) Schreiber, Minot, ND and Curtis (Michelle) Schreiber, of Fargo, ND; 13 grandchildren, Kristen Lewis, Samantha Lewis, Keaton Lewis, Andrew Sommerfeld, Jacob Sommerfeld, Johnny Sommerfeld, Ella Schreiber, Liam Schreiber, Samantha Rudolph, Jacob Rudolph, Erik Haugen, Alex Haugen and Emily Haugen; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Contreras, Omaha, NE; brothers, Carl Schreiber and John Schreiber, both of San Marcos , TX along with numerous nieces and nephews.
