Clarence Seibel, 93, passed away November 12, 2016, at home under the care of Lakeland Hospice of Fergus Falls, MN with his daughter's Ivy and Cindy by his side.
Clarence was born November 11, 1923, to Henry and Rose (Heft) Seibel in Mason City, Iowa. The family moved to McClusky, ND and later to a farm near Velva. Clarence attended country school through the 8th grade and farmed with his Father.
Clarence was inducted into the US Navy in 1944. After basic training, he served in the Seabees and was stationed near Rhode Island and Okinawa. Then he was transferred to the regular navy and he worked as an evaporator removing salt from the ocean water. He served on the USS ROGERS and was selected by his commander to captain a small travel ship that would take the commander inland to places such as Yokahama, Japan. Clarence served as Fireman First Class and was honorably discharged in July 1946. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Clarence married June Melinda Mammenga on January 13, 1954. They lived in Velva until 1964. After the flood of 1962 Clarence, with the help of his brothers, built a house near Minot where he and June raised their daughters. Clarence was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Brethren Church.
Clarence worked in construction operating draglines and cranes and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 49. He studied electronics and fixed radios and televisions as a hobby. After he retired he spent time in his garage restoring John Deere tractors. Always one to keep busy, he later decided to go back to work and drove a dump truck for Sundre Sand and Gravel until he was 80 years old. June died December 5, 2003.
Clarence loved to spend time playing cards with family and friends. He read through the Bible twice; the last time was along with his Daughter Ivy and grand-daughter Jessi. In recent years, he enjoyed watching baseball and westerns, listening to music, puzzles and as always he loved to sit in the sunshine.
Survivors include: daughters: Ivy (Mark) Mikkelson, Fergus Falls, MN, Cindy Christensen and Robin (Shane) Lawson, both of Minot; grandchildren: Chad Christensen, Minot, Jessi (Nick) Leioatts Goettingen, Germany, Aaron (Heather) Mikkelson, Fergus Falls, MN, Cody Lawson, Minot, Melissa Lawson, Fargo, Melinda Christensen and Fiancee Shawn Olson, Minot; two great-grandchildren: Junior Christensen and Kinsley Olson; sister: Sharon (Keith) Churchill, Wellsville, KS; sisters-in-law: Martha Seibel, Minot and Helen Seibel, Ross, ND along with numerous extended family.
