Clara Lorraine Morey, 92, Minot, formerly of the Norwich and Logan areas, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 in a Minot Healthcare Center.
Clara was born January 24, 1918 on the family farm near Norwich, North Dakota, the daughter of Andrew and Henrietta (Linn) Anderson. She was raised on the family farm and educated at country schools in that area, until graduating from Minot Model High School in 1938. She earned her Standard Teaching Certificate from Minot Teacher's College in 1942, her Bachelor of Science degree from Minot State College in Elementary Education in 1966 and her Master's degree in Education from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks in 1969.
Clara was united in marriage to Bruce Morey on December 25, 1942 in Minot. They made their home on a farm west of Logan, where they lived and farmed for more than forty years. Clara had a lengthy teaching career that encompassed working at several schools. These included: one year at Glenburn, seven years at Kottke Valley Rural School, seven years at Logan, two years at Drake, three years at Des Lacs, five years at the Minot Air Force Base and fifteen years at Perkett Elementary in Minot. She retired in 1983, with more than forty years as a North Dakota educator.
Clara and Bruce moved from the family farm into Minot in the spring of 1982. In June 1992, they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with family and friends. Two months later, Bruce died on August 20, 1992. In January 2009, Clara moved into The View, where she continued to be a social butterfly.
Clara was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she assisted with the Women of the Church, Deaconess Board and the Church's Fair stand. She served as an advisor for the Beta Theta Sorority, was a member of the Perkett Elementary PTA, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of Norway and provided housing for the Hostfest for more than 20 years. Clara was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge, and a charter member of the Elkette's of Minot Elks Lodge, and a 50 year member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking cookies for her grandchildren and was known to many as a meticulous housekeeper. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Whist and collecting the Centennial Quarters for her grandchildren.
Clara's loving family includes : children: Janet (Stanley) Bates, Port St. Joe, FL and Brent (Victoria) Morey, Minot; Grandchildren: Michelle (Neal) Tisdale, Suzanne (Greg) Pitz, Danielle (Wyatt) Pasley, Jennifer (Lance) Watson, Mark (Leslie) Bates, Rebecca Morey, Derek (Cari) Morey, Kyle (Jessica) Morey; Sister, Bernice Huff, Minot; Great- grandchildren: Jacqueline and Jordan Tisdale, Davis and Bennett Pitz, Austin and Landon Pasley, Tyler Morey and Caroline Watson; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Samuel, Nolan, Oscar, Thomas and sisters, Adelaide, Bertina and Esther.
Funeral service:
Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot
Visitation:
Tuesday from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church of Minot, ManorCare Rehab or Minot Sons of Norway.
