Charles "Chuck" Allison Duke, 82, Minot, and former longtime Executive Director for Community Action and City Alderman, died Monday, April 20, 2020 in a Minot Hospital.

Chuck was born March 4, 1938 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the son of Delbert and Virginia (Snell) Duke. He was raised and educated in Parkersburg, where he graduated from High School in 1956. He enlisted with the U.S. Navy later that year and proudly served his country for more than 21 years at various stations throughout the U.S., abroad, and during the Vietnam War.  As a reflection of his "service above self", Chuck was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal which is the highest non-combat decoration awarded for heroism.  He retired from active duty in May 1976, when he was honorably discharged and continued with the Naval Fleet Reserves as Chief Petty Officer and Hospital Corpsman, also serving the Marine Corps while a part of the Navy until fully retiring in 1985.

Chuck was united in marriage to Janet Michalenko (USMC) on February 14, 1959 at Bethesda, Maryland. Following their military service to our country, they moved to Minot in 1976. He was employed locally as a motel manager at the Paradise Motel and United Blood Services for a year. In 1980, he became employed with Community Action, first as a counselor and then as Executive Director until he retired in 1999. He served the City of Minot on the City Council as Alderman for Ward 7 from 1986-1998.   Later in life, Chuck enjoyed working part-time with his son-in-law, Craig, at Marketplace Foods.  His wife, Janet passed away on January 18, 2017.

Chuck personified the essence of a great community and civic leader!  Through his service on numerous non-profit boards, active participation in various social and service clubs, as a healthcare volunteer, or simply recognizing "good deeds" with a personal note and small monetary gift…Chuck worked passionately to make a difference in the Minot community!

He was a member of Southside Church of the Nazarene, Minot.  He was also a board member with the Souris Basin Transportation Board, a member of the Social Welfare Workers Association, Naval Fleet Reserve Association, Minot Elks, Minot Moose, Eagles Aerie, charter member of the Optimist Club, Minot American Legion, and VFW all of Minot. He was a volunteer at Trinity Hospital, the Special Olympics, Norsk Hostfest and the North Dakota State Fair.

Chuck's loving family includes : his children, Steven Duke, Minot, Scott (Darcy) Duke, Watertown, SD, LaDonna (Blaine) Mosser, Tigard, OR, Stuart (Trish) Duke, Spring, TX, LeAnna (Craig) Heupel, Minot; 11 grandchildren: Shawn Duke, Brandon Mosser, Brook Mosser, Brittanie Cadieux, Justin Duke, Ashlea Semmens, Jessica Duke, Braxton Heupel, Angela Duke, Brenna Heupel and Becca Duke; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Janet (Charles "Ted") Skinner, Parkersburg, West Virginia and Eleanor Gates, Parkersburg, West Virginia; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
