Casper "Cap" Storseth , 84 years young, Minot, went home to Heaven in the early morning hours of July 3, 2011 at his daughter's residence where he was staying, due to having evacuated his own home in the flood. Cap had a dozen great days staying with Diane and grandson Derik, who also had to evacuate. Granddaughter Keri was there daily too.
Cap was born January 8, 1927 on the Storseth farm at Hanks/Stady, ND during a blizzard and a chimney fire. He was one of ten children born to Carl and Martha (Lund) Storseth. Cap graduated from Grenora H. S. in 1945, excelling in basketball and baseball, once being listed as one of the top 100 basketball players in ND. After graduation, he had registered and completed all tests in basic training to serve in WWII at Ft. Snelling, MN, but the war had just come to an end. He returned to the farm to help his parents and was the last of the 5 brothers to leave the homestead. He met Delores E. O'Neill at Williston's local Band Day, a girl with the prettiest blue eyes he'd ever seen. They married April 28, 1950 in Plentywood, MT and had a lifelong love for 58 years. Living in Williston, they celebrated the births of their two daughters, Diane and Beverly "Bev", as Cap worked as a switchman on the Great Northern Railroad, transferring to Minot with Burlington Northern in 1957. He worked almost 40 years switching and developed numerous lasting friendships with his RR buddies. "Railroaders are a family too," he'd say, which is why he loved his monthly NARV meetings.
Cap had a deep, personal faith in God, worshipping with his family every single week at Christ Lutheran Church since 1957. He loved Hostfest and making klub at the church with the "whole gang" and selling it at the booth. He (and Delores) attended every Hostfest since its beginning. He worked out and had coffee with so many wonderful friends at the "Y" every Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. - noon, developing yet another "close family." He loved people! Listening to old-time music and old-time hymns, pitching horseshoes, playing cribbage, scodia mile, "your guess," reading Louis L'Amour Westerns, and gazing at the stars and moon most every night were some of his passions. He was a Lakers and Twins fan and loved watching all those MSU and Corbett Field games with his friends. But his favorite things were driving around, eating out with family, and all of our holiday and "special gatherings!" Those were his "happy times." He was immensely proud of Diane, Bev, Keri and Derik and of his great-grandson, Brock, telling them his tall tales, taking them to the homestead and East Writing Rock, sharing family heritage, and sledding with Brock in the winter. Cap would often say that people would never understand how tough times were back then. God, country, his wife, family, neighbors, and his fellowman were his Life's prioritiesand being one proud 100% Norwegian. "Help the one most in need first" was his philosophy. His word or his handshake was better than any signed document. He was loving, loyal and devoted, never late, compassionate, giving, honest and fair. He was our 'family rock,' yet a "kid at heart."
One of his all-time highlights was when, as a young kid, his Dad, Carl, took him to see Satchel Paige pitch. He also enjoyed watching the Harlem Globetrotters play basketball with Meadowlark Lemon. Dad's proudest athletic memory was playing polio benefit basketball games with his 4 brothers, The Storseth's, coached by Dad, Carl, who was well into his 60's then. They beat an all-star opposing team in a "play-to-the-end finish!" He was still shooting baskets with Brock at the "Y" less than a month ago. "Grandpa made 3 in a row right away," Brock said.
Casper is survived by daughter Diane Ness, Minot; grandkids, Keri Ness and Derik Ness (and girlfriend Angel & daughter, Alyssa), all of Minot; great-grandson, Brock Parker (Keri's son), Fort Worth, TX; former grandson-in-law, John J.
