Obituary

Casper Eugene "Cap" Haugeberg , 88, Minot and former longtime Gasman Township area farmer and businessman, died Sunday, February 14, 2016, in a Minot hospital.

Casper was born on February 6, 1928 to Halvor and Christine (Holmes) Haugeberg in Gasman Township of Ward County between Max and Minot, ND. He was reared and educated in Gasman Township and graduated from Minot High School. As a young adult he worked at Oppen's Grocery, where he met the love of his life, Melba.

Cap was united in marriage to Melba Olson on May 26, 1948 in First Lutheran Church, Minot. They made their home on a farm in Gasman Township, between Max and Minot, where they raised small grains and livestock until retiring from farming in 1988. In 1965, Cap began his employment with the Equitable Life Insurance Company as an agent until his retirement in 1990.

Melba died on June 10, 2001. Cap moved to Minot in 2003 and most recently resided at The Wellington.

Cap was a public servant and enjoyed socializing with others, which led to his involvement in the community. He was a member of the first 4-H club organized in Ward County and a 4-H leader for many years. He served as board member and president of the South Prairie School Board. He was appointed by Governor Allen Olson to serve as citizens' advisor and president for the upper Souris Region of the State Water Commission. He was a Soil Conservation Association achievement winner in 1962 and was elected Ward County Soil Conservation Supervisor in 1972. He went on to serve eight years as director of the ND Association of Soil Conservation Districts, serving as state president in 1985. He also represented the ND Soil Conservation Districts in Washington DC, celebrating fifty years of soil conservation. He was a past president and director of Souris Valley Special Education Unit and past president of the Minot Life Underwriters Association, receiving numerous company and life insurance industry awards. He served on the Agriculture Committee of the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce and during that time organized the first caravan to travel throughout the state to promote the North Dakota State Fair. Cap had been a member of First Lutheran Church for 67 years.

Cap especially enjoyed hunting, golfing and playing pool. He loved watching baseball, especially his favorite team, the New York Yankees.

Cap's loving family includes his sons: Lowell (Kay) Haugeberg, Minot, Russell (Sylvia) Haugeberg, Garrison and Randall (Kathy) Haugeberg, Minot; grandchildren: Erin (Brent) Tollerud, Kristina Haugeberg, Mitchell Haugeberg, Andrea (Joe) Meyer, Amanda (Eric) Bauer, Karissa Haugeberg and Brent (Rhodora) Haugeberg; great-grandchildren: Ty Bauer, Ashton Meyer, Graham and Margot Tollerud, Brielle Haugeberg, Brandon and Triston Sillona; sisters: Blanche Harkison, Minot, Clara Neshem, Minot and Nora Pederson, Kokomo, Ind.; in-laws, Doran Glasoe and Helen Tague and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cap was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Melba; sister, Hazel Pettys; in-laws, Albert and Judith Olson and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Celebration of the Life of Cap Haugeberg: 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 in First Lutheran Church - Minot.
Interment : Sunset Memorial Gardens - Minot
Visitation: Thursday, February 18, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Trinity Hospice or First Lutheran Church - Minot.
