Carole Joyce (Michalenko) Anderson, 86, Minot, formerly of Butte and Kief, died Friday, March 5, 2021 in a Minot Hospital.
Carole was born May 6, 1934 at Drake, ND, the daughter of George A. and Nora (Demchuk) Michalenko. She was raised, educated, and graduated from Kief High School in 1952. She furthered her education at Minot Teachers College and was united in marriage to Marvin Anderson on November 28, 1954 at Butte, ND. Their honeymoon was cut short due to chasing cattle that evening. The work of a farmer is never done!
Carole and Marvin made their home on a farm SW of Butte, where they helped Marvin's mother with the farm operation. Times were tough and crops were bad, so she taught in one room country schools in the Kief, Kongsberg and Turtle Lake areas from 1954 until they started their family, beginning with the birth of Terry Lee in 1958. In 1961 daughter Lori Beth was added. At this time Carole became a full-time homemaker and farmer alongside Marvin. They had moved to Aberdeen for a short time but chose to return to Butte to continue farming. In 1965 they moved to Minot but continued to farm in Butte and eventually Kief. In Minot, Carole worked outside the home again as a lunch lady at Jefferson School. After adopting their daughter Melissa Lynn in 1977 she also worked as a Teacher's Aide at Jefferson School.
Carole loved being on the farm and would help with all aspects of the farming operation, never letting the men outwork her. Many would say she was the hardest working woman they knew. She had a great love of the farm, but her passion came later as she became known as "Grippin Granny". With Marvin as her pit crew, they travelled to State and County Fairs to participate in souped up Garden Tractor pulls where her competitive spirt shined. She was the family expert in the game of Blitz, enjoyed doing fundraisers in Butte, Minot and surrounding areas, gardening, playing bingo, fishing, camping and trips to the Casino. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. If one thing was certain, she was always on the go, and you never saw Carole without Marvin. They were always side by side on their adventures. They were also known as collectors and would often be seen at many of the auctions in the area, where they made multiple life-long friends. Carole was a woman that people remembered and was loved and will be missed by all.
Carole's loving family includes, husband of 66 years, Marvin; daughters, Lori (Ron) Thom, Garrison; Melissa Houston (Chad Fors), Minot; daughter in law, Dorothy Anderson, Harvey; grandchildren: Shantel (Aaron) Ottmar, Minot, Derek (Tammy) Anderson, Velva, Miranda (Rob) Adam, Harvey, Dana Anderson & Mirissa Anderson (Tom Milford), Butte, Megan Houston (Joey Halsey), Dylan Houston & Madison Houston all of Burlington; great grandchildren, Colton & Coy Anderson, Kemper Ottmar, Shayla & Waylon Adam, Terrey & Andrew Anderson; sister, Ardella Brandt, Minot; sister in-law, Beverly Michalenko, Eugene, OR; special family friend, Dannie (Sherry) Evans; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents, son, Terry, grandson, Dustin Thom, brothers, Raynold and Virgil Michalenko and a sister, Delores Parsley.
The family would like to especially thank the CHI Skilled Care Nursing Home in Garrison for the wonderful care they've given mom these last few months. They have gone above and beyond and treated her like family.
