Carley V. Olson , 89, Minot, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in a Minot Hospital.
Carley was born February 29, 1924 at Miles City, Montana, the daughter of Kenneth and Eva (Crooks) Yates. She was raised and educated in New Salem and continued her schooling at Dickinson State University, where she received her standard teaching certificate.
While teaching in Almont, North Dakota, she met Gordon B. Olson, who was on leave at the time from his military duties during World War II. They were united in marriage on January 20, 1945 in Tacoma, Washington, where he was on leave. Carley completed a year of teaching at Belfield, ND while Gordon was finishing his military service and returned to North Dakota in 1946. The family moved from Dickinson to Minot in 1967, when Gordon was named as President of Minot State University.
Throughout the years, Carley was a wife, mother, teacher, homemaker and provided all-around support to her family. She diligently searched the Bible to have a clear understanding of salvation. The searching of scripture was a lifelong pursuit. Carley provided much support to Gordon during his professional endeavors. Gordon died June 30, 2009.
Carley was a member of Bethel Free Lutheran Church, Minot and active with Bible study groups there.
Her loving family includes , daughter, Wendy (Kerwin) Sletto, Grand Forks, ND; son-in-law, John Bittay, California; grandchildren, Heather (Bobby) Quick, Chad Clark, Cherie (Dereck) Johnson, Larissa (Daniel) Conner, & Suzanne Sletto; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, LaVerne Yates, Absarokee, MT, Sylvia Olson, Dickinson, ND and Audrey Olson, Williston, ND; Special Mention is made of her nephew, Ross (Karla) Yates, grandnephews, Shane (Amy) Yates & Brandon Yates, grandniece, Amber (Brent) Feller, who tended lovingly to many of the needs of both Carley & Gordon throughout the years.
Carley was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 64 years, Gordon, daughters, Linda Bittay and Corliss Clark, stillborn infant, Ariel Olson, brother, Marlin Yates, brothers-in-law, Merrill Olson, Leon Olson, Arlie Burgess and sister-in-law, Lois Olson Burgess.
Funeral service
: Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Free Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment
: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:
Friday from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to AFLC World Missions, Bethel Free Lutheran or an organization of the donor's choice.
