Carl August Lindlauf, 84, Minot, formerly of Kongsberg, ND, passed away Wednesday, June 26, at home with his family by his side after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Carl August Lindlauf was born May 15, 1940, in Minot North Dakota to Edwin and Ruth (Schmidt) Lindlauf. Carl was baptized and confirmed at Saint John Lutheran Church and grew up on the Lindlauf Family farm near Kongsberg, together with his sisters Norma and Emily. He was educated in a township single room schoolhouse through 8th grade, then attended Velva High School for 3 years, before graduating from Dakota Lutheran Academy in 1958.
Carl received an appointment to West Point Military Academy, but instead enlisted in the US Army in 1959. He graduated from NCO Academy and served in SE Asia as an Airborne Ranger on a long-range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) team for several tours of duty. In 1962, he was transferred to the Pentagon in Washington DC, where he met the love of his life Judith Perkins, and they married on March 16, 1963.
Carl and Judy returned to North Dakota, where they farmed the Lindlauf family farm for over 40 years. Carl prided himself on keeping current with the latest farming innovations and was one of the first in the area to raise sunflowers, and canola. He believed strongly in soil conservation and planted many miles of shelter belts across his farm and was one of the first to embrace no-till technology. Upon retirement from farming, Carl remained active in the North Dakota farming community working for Magic City Implement.
Carl and Judy enjoyed nearly 56 years of marriage, and their five children, Jimmy, Debbie, Beckie, Angie and Peggie were at the center of their life together. Carl possessed a special gift for connecting to people. He could talk for hours to strangers and became friends on several occasions with people who had dialed the wrong number. He was extremely knowledgeable of history and geography and could share stories for hours. He loved to laugh and often showed his love for family by teasing. Carl and Judy enjoyed playing cards and hosted many pinochle parties. He loved music, and had radios in every tractor, listening to his polka music while feeding the cattle on Sunday afternoons.
Carl was raised with Jesus Christ at the center of his life and kept his family active in the worship communities of St. John's Lutheran of Kongsberg, then Oak Valley Lutheran in Velva.
Carl is survived by his five children James (Susan) Lindlauf, Grand Forks, Deborah Reimers, Jamestown, ND, Rebecca (Timothy) Sayre, Grand Forks, ND, Angela (Charles) Roehm, Minot, ND, and Margaret (Jeffrey) Igielski, Pullman, WA; fifteen grandchildren, Natasha (Eric) Thorlaksen, Kristoffer (Heidi) Larson, Samuel (Melissa) Olson, Anastassia Larson, James Reimers, Jacob (Maxine) Reimers, Carl Lindlauf, Isaac Bargamian, August Igielski, Andrew (Malitta) Reimers, Olivia Igielski, Jocelyn Sayre, Josiah Bargamian, Daniel Sayre, and Gabriel Igielski; four great grandchildren, Abigail, Henry and Benjamin Thorlaksen, Kabrie Larson; two sisters, Norma Hagenow, and Emily (Robert) Armstrong; and four nieces.
