Carl Joseph Issel Jr, 83, Burlington, ND, formerly of Minot and Washington, died Friday, August 12, 2011 in a Minot Hospital.
Carl was born January 17, 1928 at Minot, ND, the son of Carl Sr. and Stella (Koch) Issel. He was raised and educated at Minot. He entered into active duty service with the US Navy and honorably served his country stateside at the end of World War II.
Carl was united in marriage to Virginia Fields on August 18, 1949 a marriage that lasted 49 years . During his younger years, he worked in Minot with his father at a tailor shop on Main Street, was employed in the construction industry, owned and operated A-Z Rentals on North Hill and later Western Security for a few years. He also owned KUDY Radio Station in Spokane, WA for a time.
They moved to Washington State in 1968, where he sold real estate in Seattle and worked for several construction companies before moving to the Yakima-Spokane area, where was employed with Inland Construction Company building homes and apartment complexes for a number of years. Virginia died in 1999. Carl retired in 2003 and returned to North Dakota. He was united in marriage to Jeanne (Trihub) Christenson on July 12, 2003 at Williston. They had made their home in Burlington these past several years until the recent flood.
Carl was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot. Upon returning to the area he had been a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot. During his younger years, Carl served on the Minot City Council as an alderman, was a volunteer Ward County Sheriff and was active with the Minot Junior Chamber of Commerce. He had been a member of the Minot Gun Club, where he participated in Trap & Skeet Shooting events. He had also been a member of the ND Republican Party, active with Toastmasters, Minot Kiwanis Club, Minot Elks Lodge, Eagle's Aerie and was a former member of the Minot American Legion.
His loving family includes , wife, Jeanette "Jeanie" Issel, Minot; children, Jerry Kuwahara-Issel, Sacramento CA, Robert "Bob" Carl Issel , Selah,WA, and David Alan Issel, Sacramento, CA, Carla Jo Issel, Yakima, WA; grandchildren; Autumn Lee Kuwahara-Lewis, Tara Jean Issel, Katrin Lynn Issel, Carlee Loyice Issel, Brian Robert Issel, Tommy Hummel, Tehira Hummel; great grandson; Braeden Michale Woolen; sister; Della Marie Hartgrove, New Salem, ND; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virginia and brothers, Richard and Theodore "Roy" Issel.
Celebration of Life Service:
Friday, August 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in St Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to St Mark's Lutheran Church Building Fund or an organization of the donor's choice.
