Obituary

Bonnie Brekke, 88, Voltaire and formerly of Minot died peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026 in a Minot hospital from complications related to pneumonia surrounded by her loving family.

Bonnie Adelgunde Schook was born on April 25, 1938 in Minot, ND to Myron and Lydia (Schoenwald) Shook. She was raised on a farm near Voltaire, attended elementary school in Voltaire and graduated from Velva High School in 1956. She attended NDSU for a short time prior to marrying Severin Brekke on July 28, 1957 at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva. They made their home in Minot where Bonnie was employed in the Souris River Telephone Billing Department. She established First Lutheran Church Daycare, Minot’s first daycare, in 1970 and operated that entity for twelve years. She served as the receptionist for Dr. Lowell Cheney’s dental office as well as actively farming the family farm since 1973.

Bonnie was a longtime active member of First Lutheran Church in Minot where she participated in the Altar Guild, WELCA and the Fair Stand. She was an active volunteer for the Norsk Hostfest for many years.

Bonnie was a woman of many talents and passions. Whether she was preparing home-cooked meals for her family or baking delicious sweets to share with others, she always found ways to care for those around her. She loved spending time outdoors, mowing the lawn, working in the yard, and tending to the farmstead that meant so much to her. Bonnie also expressed her love through her creativity, lovingly making Christmas stockings and beautiful tree skirts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to cherish for years to come.

Bonnie’s loving family includes her husband of 68 years: Severin; children: Bruce (Brenda) Brekke of Columbus, Ohio and Brenda (Monty) Lee of Minot. Her loving grandchildren: Travis (Lindsey) Brekke, Jocelyn (Rob) Sturges, Jerrica (Justin) Elgin, Jordan (Alexis) Lee and Brandon Lee; great grandchildren: Tytus Lee, Jameson Brekke, Jackson Brekke , Baby Lilly Sturges, Peyton Sturges, Hudson Sturges, Easton Elgin, Parker Elgin, Copeland Lee, Posey Lee; brother: Eddie (Jackie) Shook of Albuquerque, NM and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
