Bernice A. Berg, 95, Minot, formerly of Lignite, died Saturday, March 12, 2016, in a Minot hospital.

Bernice was born March 26, 1920, near Coteau, ND to Tom and Agnes (Melquist) Thompson. She was raised and educated in Coteau, graduating high school in 1938.

As a young adult she worked as a secretary at the courthouse in Bowbells and for the bank in Coteau until moving to Portland, OR. She returned to Coteau and had a blind date set up by a friend, with Odleif Berg.

Bernice and Odleif were united in marriage on September 21, 1940 in Bowbells, ND. They made their home throughout the years in Billings, MT and Lignite, ND. They maintained many business interests in the Lignite area throughout their working years. Bernice was active with her husband sharing in their farming, dairy and grocery store businesses. Bernice really got her start in the farming business cooking three meals and in-between for lots of people when Ody had a threshing crew.

She was blessed to be a mother of four children (Joan, Gary, Philip, Judy) giving them a legacy of faith, hope and love.

Bernice was a member of Tonset Lutheran Church in Foothills and then Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite serving on the ladies aid, church council and teaching Sunday School. She was actively involved in the NW ND Girl Scout Council, serving on the Burke County Social Services Board and the Divide County Public Library in Crosby. At age 55, she began playing the violin and traveled to Williston for lessons and became a violinist in the Williston String Orchestra. Bernice showed her family the value of hard work, family, positive attitude and hospitality. She will be deeply missed by all who shared in her life.

Her surviving family includes her loving husband of 75 years, Odleif Berg, Minot; children, Joan (Larry) Grindy, Minot, ND, Gary (Mary) Berg, Phoenix, AZ, Phil (Nancy) Berg, New London, MN and Judy (the late Charles) Olson, Rochester, MN; grandchildren, Janet (Jeff) Meserve, Bruce (Rebecca) Grindy, Jason (Valerie) Berg, Justin (Chastity) Berg, Eric (Tina) Berg, Matt Berg, Brian (Terrah) Olson and Adam (Angie) Olson; great-grandchildren, Kristin Meserve; Hayden, Carson and MacKenzie Berg; Keaton and Drew Berg; Evan Berg; Rhiannon and Tessa Olson; baby boy Adam and Angie Olson coming in July 2016; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Charles Olson and siblings, Arthur, Mabel, Esther, Tillman, Lester, Blanche and Ervin.

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite, ND

Interment: Tonset Historical Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lignite, ND

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials are preferred to the Tonset Historical Association.
