Barry J. "Bear" McKee, 62, Minot, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in a Minot hospital.
Barry was born January 22, 1947 in Harrisburg, PA to Samuel and Vivian (Monas) McKee. He was raised and educated in Harrisburg, graduating from John Harris High School in 1966.
Barry enlisted in the United States Air Force on May 16, 1966. He worked as a jet engine mechanic serving in various locations around the world including Guam, Thailand, and the Minot Air Force Base. Barry attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1973.
Barry was united in marriage to Elaine Hellickson on January 12, 1968, in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. Shortly after their marriage, they moved back to Pennsylvania for a short time, but returned back to Minot in 1978 to raise their family. Barry gained employment at Minot Builder's Supply as a truck driver and later as a dispatcher, continuing his employment for the past 26 years at the company until his death.
Barry was an avid hockey fan and enjoyed watching hockey of all levels, especially the Detroit Red Wings. He loved to travel and spend time camping with Elaine at Ft. Stevenson State Park near Lake Sakakawea.
Barry loved to volunteer at the Norsk Hstfest. He took vacation every year to help Choice Hotels with the Great Hall Musikk Butikk Booth. Barry was an excellent cook. He showcased his skills during holiday dinners, where his home-made cookies were a favorite for the entire family. He will be dearly missed by all who shared in his life, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored with his whole heart.
Barry is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Elaine McKee, Minot; Daughters, Dawn (Thomas) Koble, Sioux Falls, SD and Jolene Ziebarth, Minot; Son, David (April) McKee, Minot; Grandchildren, Alison and Aiden McKee and Austin Moe; Brothers, Terry (Lucy) McKee, Little Rock, AR and Samuel (Pat) McKee, Steelton, PA; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and his Shih Tzu dog, Gizmo.
Barry was preceded in death by his Parents; and brother, Dennis McKee.
Funeral service:
Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in West Minot Church of God, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:
Friday from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
