Avis Hendrickson, 95, Minot and formerly of New Town died on May 23, 2019 in a Minot hospital.

Avis Thea Grendahl was born on February 17, 1924 in Keene, ND to George and Celia (Graue) Grendahl. She was raised on the family farm as the third oldest of eleven children. When she was six years old, the family moved to a farm near Sanish where she walked two miles to attend a one-room country school. Each day after school, she would bake a cake from scratch for her family. Avis graduated from Sanish High School in 1941, received her teaching certificate and taught country school for several years.

Avis married Lynn Hendrickson on July 11, 1942. They made their home on a cattle ranch in McKenzie and Mountrail counties and Avis was employed in the NDSU/Fort Berthold Extension Office in New Town for 22 years. She retired in 1988.

Lynn passed away in 1974 and Avis moved to Minot in 1989 where she did volunteer work, enjoyed bowling in a regular weekly league well into her 80's and was an avid card player of whist, pinochle and Uno. She was very competitive while playing cards and throwing dice for coffee at work. She moved to Somerset Assisted Living Center in 2010.

Avis was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church in New Town.

Avis is survived by her daughter: Ethyl Lynn Hendrickson; siblings: Gayle (Gary) Nybakken, Wayne (Joann) Grendahl and Dean (Velma) Grendahl as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Avis was preceded in death by her parents: George and Celia Grendahl, husband: Lynn Hendrickson and siblings: Carol Peterson, Orrel, Truman, Myron, Minor, Vernon and Noel Grendahl.

Interment will be in the New Town Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Avis Hendrickson.
