Arvel Mettler, 93, Minot and formerly of Upham died on Sunday, November 18, 2018 in a Minot nursing home.
Arvel was born on April 3, 1925 on the family farm in Little Deep Township of McHenry County near Upham, ND to Wilhelm and Rosina (Brandt) Mettler. He was raised on the family farm and educated at the Woodward School in Little Deep Township and graduated from Upham High School. As a young adult he assisted with the operation of the family farm. Arvel was drafted into the U.S. Army on March 19, 1946 and served until his honorable discharge on September 18, 1947. Following his discharge, he returned to the farm.
Arvel married Evelyn Vikan on January 4, 1948 in Bottineau. They made their home on a farm in Deep River Township of McHenry County near Upham. From this union two children were born: David and Diane. After retiring, they moved to Minot in 1992. They had spent the winter months in Texas for several years. They moved to Edgewood Vista in 2010. Evelyn died on August 2, 2017. Most recently, Arvel had resided at Unsong's Adult Foster Care Home for two years and at Trinity Homes for the past month.
Arvel was a member of Our Redeemer's Church and a former member of the Reformed Church in Upham. He served on the Deep River Township Board and especially enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and golfing.
Arvel's loving family includes his children: David Mettler and Diane (Clyde) Thorne all of Minot; four grandchildren: Dustin (Jennifer) Thorne, Zachary (Amber) Thorne, Jeremy Thorne and Christopher (Amber) Mettler; four great grandchildren: Maya and Kayla Thorne, Eslie and Zander Mettler; brother: Lawrence (Gertie) Mettler of Bismarck; sister-in-law: Sylvia Mettler of Bonita CA, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arvel was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings: Adeline (Alvin) Marks, Bernhard Mettler and Delores (Orel) Hett.
Celebration of the Life of Arvel Mettler: Monday, November 26, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in Our Redeemers Church, Minot.
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Cancer Research.
