Arthur "Art" Sevig , 95, Minot, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, in his home.
Art was born July 27, 1915, in Palermo, ND, to Peter and Anna (Halvorson) Sevig. He was raised and received his education in country schools near Palermo.
After completing his education, he assisted his family with the operation of the family farm until gaining employment with the Great Northern Railway at the age of 23.
Art entered the US Navy in 1944 serving his country during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to North Dakota and was united in marriage to Alpha Finneseth on May 15, 1946 in Minot where they lived and raised their five children.
Art continued his employment with Great Northern Railroad for a total of 37 years until his retirement in 1975. Art was an active member in Zion Lutheran Church, Golden K Kiwanis Club and the Sons of Norway. Meals On Wheels and Lifelines at Trinity Hospital were also the recipients of volunteer time for a number of years.
Art enjoyed woodworking, reading, traveling, playing games with his family, and loved playing his button box accordion. He will be deeply missed by all who shared in his life and fondly remembered for a legacy of love and faith set by pure example.
His loving family includes his wife of 64 years, Alpha, Minot; children, Donna Desjardins, Minot, ND, Carol (Jeff) Hitchcock, Hudson, WI, Tim (Linda) Sevig, Boise, ID, Judy (Randy) Hanson, Minot, ND and Lana (Mark) Gilberts, Monticello, MN; Sixteen Grandchildren: Loren Desjardins, Chad (Donna) Desjardins, Bonnie (Anthony) Holmes, Erika Hitchcock, Bryan Hitchcock, Michael Sevig, Michelle (Eli) Robinson, Wendy Sevig, Holly (Jason) Dyrud, Alissa (Tony) Nelson, Erin (James) Lyke, Rebecca (Luke) Steen, Bjrn (Alissa) Hanson, Kinsey Hanson, Paula Gilberts and Joshua Gilberts; Fifteen Great Grandchildren; sister, Martha Rovenko, Minot, ND, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Hannah Hanson and Esther Kabanuck and brothers: Harold, Alfred and Palmer Sevig.
Funeral service
: Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment
will be in the Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation
: Friday, April 8, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
Memorials
: Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church or Trinity Hospice.
