Obituary

Anita Borgman, 97, Minot, died peacefully May 2, 2016 in Bethany on University Nursing Home in Fargo.

Anita Lumley Hagen was born August 24, 1918, in Norma, ND, to Joseph Theodore and Maud Etta (Lumley) Hagen. She attended elementary school and was raised in the small town where she was born. She went to high school at Model High School in Minot, ND, graduating in 1936. She played cello in the band, sang in the chorus and played basketball.

One night at a barn dance a good looking, smooth talking young man named John Borgman asked her to dance. He was with someone else but Anita must have made quite an impression because he asked her to the movies and the rest is history.

Anita and John were married September 22, 1938, in the Methodist Parsonage in Kenmare, ND. Daughter Patricia Ann (Pat) was born on April 8, 1939 and son John Cornelius Jr. (Bob) was born on January 26, 1941. They made their home in Minot but their lives were interrupted in 1943 by World War II when John was drafted into the Navy and served in the South Pacific.

Anita kept the home fires burning and after the war the family lived in Dickinson, ND in a two room apartment above the Bon Ton Bakery where John worked in sales and delivery. Richard Lee (Rick) was born on January 23, 1947 and the family moved back to Minot in 1949. John worked at Harry's Tire Service, and to help the family financially, when the kids were all in school, Anita took a job at the bowling alley where she supervised pin setters and rented out shoes. In 1955, she took a job as a sales clerk at the Kresge Dollar Store and from 1963 until she retired in 1980 she worked as a sales clerk and buyer for the Housewares Department at the Home of Economy in Minot.

On March 3, 1968, war changed her life again when Rick, a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division, was killed in Hue, Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. Her son, John Jr. died on June 3, 2014 from complications of lung cancer.

For 10 years after John retired in 1982, the couple spent winters in Apache Junction, AZ and summers in Minot. John died on November 16, 2005. They had been married 67 years.

Anita was a member of the America Legion Auxiliary and Vincent United Methodist Church and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary. Some of her favorite hobbies were sewing, needlework, baking, canning, and gardening. Among the joys in her life was having company and visiting with friends and relatives, but her seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart.

Anita is survived by her daughter Patricia (Glenn) Filipi of Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren: David Filipi, Columbus, OH, Jane Filipi (Keith Skeie), Kihei, HI, Barbara Borgman (Dan Horning), Burnsville, MN, Bryan Borgman, Ham Lake, MN, Susan Berg (Ted), East Bethel, MN, Shannon Sullivan (Brenda), West Fargo, ND, Laura Sullivan, East Bethel, MN and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, John; sons: Rick and John Jr.; sisters: Lucille Schiff, Dorothy Ommen, Maxine Coughlin and brothers: Joseph Hagen, John Hagen and Douglas Hagen.
