Alverda Larsen, 99, Minot, died Saturday, April 25, 2020 in a Minot nursing home.
Alverda was born June 5, 1920 in Donnybrook, ND, the oldest of six children to Herman and Edna (Schultz) Larson. She completed high school in Donnybrook and continued her education at Minot State University. Alverda earned her standard teaching certificate and took her first teaching position in a one room school house with sleeping quarters behind the fireplace, located north of Coulee, ND.
Alverda taught in a number of communities during her teaching career. It was in Velva, ND that she met Warren Larsen. They were joined in marriage August 28, 1948. They moved to San Francisco so Warren could attend mortuary school. Alverda also taught school during her time in California.
They returned to Minot and have called it home since 1954. During the 1969 flood, Alverda took a teaching position in Belcourt, ND. She would spend the next 26 years of her life educating first graders in Belcourt. It was often said, she was the first to arrive and the last one to leave school. She also made sure every single student had what they needed; even if Alverda had to provide it. She may not have had children of her own, but she had hundreds of kids during her teaching career. She retired from education in 1995. Warren passed away in 2001.
Alverda's generosity was extended to many during her lifetime. She loved and gave unconditionally her time and resources to all in need. It wasn't a secret, that Alverda loved chocolate; Hershey's kisses were a favorite. So much so, that it caused her mother concern. She made candies and shared the gifts of her labors with many. KFC chicken, pistachio salad and cherries on the fourth of July were a few of the treats supplied for family gatherings by Alverda and Warren.
Alverda is survived by her sisters Darlene (Earl) Stephan, Rochester, MN and Ardella Johnson, Minot; sister-in-law, Marjorie Larson, Kenmare, ND along with numerous nieces, nephews and former students.
Alverda was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Verlund, Dallas (Esther) and Dale (Betty) Larson and brother-in-law, Paul Johnson.
