Gordon Johnson

Gordon L. Johnson, 87, Minot, ND passed from this life to life eternal on July 11, 2018 at a Rochester, MN, medical facility.

Gordon was born January 5, 1931 to Henry and Esther Johnson in Everett, WA.  He moved with his parents to Minot in the forties and graduated from Minot High School in 1949.  His favorite memories of High School were FFA and playing the cornet.

Gordon married Leona Mae Klimpel on June 7, 1959 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Sawyer, ND.  They made their home on the North Dakota State Fairgrounds where he served as the Grounds Superintendent.  He spent a total of 45 years working for the fair.

Gordon was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot.  He enjoyed traveling with family and attending fairs around the country.  Gordon was a member of the Minot Curling Club and served for many years as ice maker.  His team took first place in the USCA Senior Men’s National in 1987.  He enjoyed keeping busy with woodworking, his lawn and flowers, working at his farm at Berthold and having “coffee with the boys”.  He shared Leona’s interest in collecting and displaying Hallmark ornaments and Dept. 56 houses.

In his retirement years he drove the chase car for Deneschuk Homes and volunteered at the Norsk Hostfest. Gordon was a loving husband and cared for Leona during her battle with MS.

His loving family includes: children, DeAnn (Nelson) Acosta, Mililani, HI; Denise (Joel) Luehmann, Mankato, MN; grandchildren Nolan and Landon Acosta; Adam Luehmann; Emily (Thomas) Frank nee Luehmann; brother-in-law Vernon (Ione) Klimpel, Fargo; sisters-in-law Linda (Eldon) Schlosser, Bismarck; Anna (LaVerne) Tofstad, Erskine, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

MessageTo the Johnson Family,
I was sad to hear of Gordon’s death. I worked with him at the State Fair and he was fun to work for. Also enjoyed chatting with him at the Holiday Inn in the pavilion when he stopped in for his regular coffee. May he Rest In Peace.

MessageSo sorry I won't be present at your father's funeral as I am on vacation out of state. I am thankful that I was able to have a good phone conversation with your Dad during the past month about the history of the Minot Curling Club. Your Dad was a friend and classmate of my father. Gordy was very supportive of me during my presidency at the Minot Curling Club and when I needed information about St. Paul's Church. Hold on to all your memories. With sympathy, Brad Thomas

MessageSorry for you loss, but may many great memories of Gordy's help you through the days. First met Gordy's down and the fairgrounds, of course, and we always visit when we'd run into each other. Great guy and I'll think of him as Mr. Fairgrounds always!
