Jock Stevick, 45, Minot area dentist and beloved member of our community, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Jock’s life began April 22, 1972, as the son of Jack and Marlene (Folvag) Stevick. He grew up in the ‘Magic City’ where he was part of the Minot High School Magicians’ success in basketball, winning a state title his senior year. Growing up, Jock loved his time spent with cousins in Minot and Grenora, and had many fond memories of his summers working for Morelli’s Distributing as a teenager and after college. He graduated from high school in 1990 and continued his education and basketball career at Minot State University, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.

At Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Jock trained as a Doctor of Dental Science. He joined the Souris Valley Dental Group family in 2002. Jock poured his heart and soul into dentistry. He was relentless in his quest to offer the best care for his patients, constantly learning and perfecting his trade as a member of the Spear Study Club. Along the way, he met some of his dearest friends.

Jock was joined in marriage to Lacey Collins on November 22, 2007, on the sunny shores of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They were meant to be soul mates and best friends from the very beginning. They called Minot home and were blessed with four beautiful children, who fill their lives with joy, love, and laughter every single day. As a family, summers were spent making precious memories at their cabin on Lake Metigoshe. At the lake, Jock held court as captain of the boat, pulling family and friends around all day. He loved gathering with friends, enjoyed sunsets, and rarely passed up a pontoon ride. Jock was also an avid golfer, and religiously played on ‘Men’s Night’ at the Minot Country Club.

Jock lived life with gusto—jumping into every day with both feet at full speed both professionally and personally. He played hard but loved harder. His best attributes as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend shone even brighter in the face of adversity. Jock was steadfast in everything he did. He learned he had Multiple Myeloma in the fall of 2015, and did everything he could to get ahead of it, researching the best care and keeping those around him optimistic at every turn. Never one to complain, he offered one of his many ‘Jockisms’ to concerned family and friends: “It is what it is…”  A lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan, Jock bled purple every Sunday during football season, and was there to witness Diggs’ recent game-winning touchdown. For everything Jock went through, he was a living miracle, and we will never forget the lessons of faith he brought to us when facing life’s most unthinkable challenges.

Jock is survived by his loving wife, Lacey Stevick, Minot; his children, Jack, Selia, Sofia and Elise Stevick; parents, Marlene Stevick, Minot and Jack (Joann) Stevick, Minot, ND and Mesquite, NV; sister, Kim (Jim) Guettler, Minnetonka, MN; stepsister, Andi Kaplan, St. George, UT; father-in-law, Rick (Bonnie) Collins; brothers-in-law, Rory Collins, Minot and Casey (Megan) Collins, Minneapolis, MN; nieces and nephew, Anna and Kala Guettler and Mia, Isla, Liva and Joey Collins along with numerous cousins and a village of friends who have blessed the lives of our family.

Jock was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Candace Collins.

MessageWe are so very sad and utterly shocked to read about Jock's death. What a fine man and young family. There is so much to say about him. As a sign of his remarkable character and professionalism, Jock reached out by his own initiative, to science students to offer them first-hand knowledge and advice of what it takes to be a dentist and a professional. They couldn't have heard from a better role model--smart, sincerely interested in his patients, friendly, and devoted to his profession and community. Nancy and I trusted him implicitly as our personal dentist and as our friend. He was an ardent supporter of Minot State University and our mission. As president, I valued highly his opinions and his involvement in the life of our university. Our sincere and deep condolences go out to his wonderful family. He made a difference in all of our lives. We only have the strongest and fondest memories of Dr. Stevick.

MessageOur sincere sympathy to Lacey, Jack, and family! My greatest memory was two years ago in Fargo celebrating our 25th anniversary of winning a state basketball title! Jock was the spiritual leader of the team and was the happiest member of the celebration! He will not be forgotten! A true teammate for life and a heart of gold! He made a huge impact on all our lives!

Love,

Dale, Teresa, Mark, and Ali

MessageMy deepest sympathies to you and your family on Jock's passing. I worked with Jock when he was student at Minot State. As I think of him, the following come to mine. He was great person. He had a positive attitude and treated everyone with respect. He was persistent. He worked hard to achieve his goal of getting into dental school and was successful as a dentist. He was willing to help others. On several occasions I recommended students job shadow him and he helped in lining up speakers to talk to students interested in dentistry. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.

MessageAs one of Dr Stevick's patients with childhood dental trauma issues I will miss his kind and careful ways in walking me through dental visits. He always came in to see how things were going when I was there for a cleaning. It took years to find a dentist like Dr Stevick. Our prayers are with the family....

MessageLacey & family - It was such a shock to hear of the death of your beloved husband and dad. Jock was one of the first athletes I got to know very well during my 10 years @ MSU working closely with his dad @ Stevick's Sporting Goods. Jock always had the biggest smile on his face and was one of the nicest kids I've ever met. He will be truly missed by family and friends.

MessageMany years Jock and I played high school and college hoops against each other. Although Jock seemed to end with the “win”, he always had competitive class when enjoying his victory. My heart hurts for Jock’s family and the community he loved. But remember the smiles and sincerely conversations we all had the pleasure of experiencing with Jock.
