Carl Jensen

Carl Leroy Jensen, 82, Minot and formerly of Grand Forks, Dickinson and Bismarck died on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 in a Minot hospital.

Carl was born on January 12, 1935 in Omaha, NE to Carl and Elizabeth (Ford) Jensen.  He was reared and educated in Omaha, graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in 1954 and attended the University of Nebraska Omaha for three years. 

Carl served in the military for almost thirty years on both active duty and reserve duty status and received many awards and decorations for his service as a First Sergeant with the 416 Ordnance Battalion 16 Corps of the Fifth Army.  He helped establish the first U.S. Army Reserve Special Forces Unit in Nebraska and helped coordinate medical evacuations for critically ill and wounded patients during the Vietnam War.

Following his active duty military service and while he was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, Carl attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Religious Studies; then, completed a two-year program at Seabury Western Theological Seminary in Evanston Illinois.  He returned to UND where he received his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance.

Following the completion of his education he was employed for twenty years primarily as a therapist, working with those individuals who were chemically dependent.  Following his retirement in 1997 he and Joan moved to Minot where they resided at 1630 14th St. S.W. for many years prior to moving into the Wellington Assisted Living Center. 

Carl married Margaret Joan Johnson on December 31, 1955 in Omaha, NE.  They made their home in Casper, Laramie and Sheridan in Wyoming where he was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield for eight years before moving to Grand Forks where he attended UND.  During his 20 years as an addiction counselor the family resided in Minot, Dickinson and Bismarck.

Carl was a member of the Vincent United Methodist Church, Toastmasters and the National Association of Addiction Counselors.  He especially enjoyed traveling, bowling, golfing, walking, playing bridge.  Carl also volunteered his time with military retirees and at Trinity Hospital.

Carl’s loving family includes his wife of sixty-one years: Joan; children:  Jason (Kathy) Jensen of Bellvue CO, Jackie Jensen of Minot and John (Teresa) Jensen of Aberdeen WA; grandchildren:  Tyler, Jessica and Nicole Jensen; and nephews:  Steve and Jim Chaney.  His kitty cat Parker will also miss taking long naps with Carl.  Carl’s other feline family members were always very special to him.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and sister: Marjorie (Robert) Chaney.

 

Celebration of the Life of Carl Jensen:  Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church - Minot.

Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.

Visitation:  Monday, February 13, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.

Memorials are preferred to the Souris Valley Animal shelter or Prairie Paws Rescue P.O. Box 1114 Jamestown, ND 58402-1114, or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
