Mavis Irene Ambers

Mavis Irene (Olson) Ambers accepted God’s invitation home on July 5, 2013 in a Minot hospital due to complications from a stroke at the age of 86. She was born north of Heimdal on June 19, 1927 to Helmer and Matilda (Christiansen) Olson. She grew up on a farm in the area around Heimdal and Wellsburg and graduated 8th grade from Arne School. As a young lady, she preferred to work on the farm and would choose to do manual labor rather than be indoors doing the kitchen work. She did shocking and hauled bundles for the threshing machine. If she were ever hurt or ill, she would never complain.

She married Sidney Ambers on the family farm in Heimdal in 1948. Soon after, they welcomed their two sons, Clinton and Arne. Years later, she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo. She and her husband also ran a café in MN and a second hand store in Fargo.  When Sid retired from the Fire Dept. in Fargo, they bought a farm in Pelican Rapids, MN. After selling the farm, they moved to Fessenden and were snowbirds in Florida for several winters.

When Sid died in 1998, Mavis moved to Ryder to live with her son, Arne. She then moved to Minot to be closer to her brother Noran (Agnes) Olson and family. Agnes ensured that she made it to her various appointments and was not only a sister-in-law but her friend.  She became an important part of her brother’s family as they cared deeply for her as she participated in all the family events.

Her special great-niece and nephew, Journey and Carter, loved to visit her at Dakota Terrace and Edgewood Vista where she would brag to her friends about the “twins”. Mavis frequently looked forward to her nephew, Tracy Larson’s cooking and spending time with her niece Sandi, who held a special place in her heart. She counted on her Sunday afternoon phone calls from dear niece, Lori (Olson) Ray who cared for her deeply. Mavis took pride in her special birthday buddy, great-nephew Kaiden Bredahl, who celebrated with her for the past 13 years.

Mavis became a member of the Minot Eagles Auxiliary in 2001 and was voted and named Mother of the Year in 2006-07, and Sister of the Year in 2012. She held the role of inside/outside guard for six years. She was a member of Viking Lutheran Church, south of Maddock and attended services at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot.

She enjoyed puzzles, keno and arts and crafts with her many friends in her spare time. She enjoyed hunting gophers in the pasture, gardening and being out in the fresh air. Her favorite song was the “Keys in the Mailbox” and her favorite color was blue.

Mavis is special to those who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Mavis is survived by her sons: Clinton (Cheryl) Ambers, Audubon, MN and Arne (Alice) Ambers, Florida; grandchildren: Chad (Missy) Ambers, Curtis (Noelle) Ambers, Catherine (Craig) Kangas and Alicia Ambers; great grandchildren: Caylee Ambers and Jocelyn Ambers; Brother Noran “Stanley” (Agnes) Olson, Minot; sister, Marlys Chrissis, Dilworth, MN; sister-in-law, Jane Olson, Harvey; numerous nieces, nephews, great and great, great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, great grandson, Carter Ambers, three brothers (Harley, Norman, Julian) and four sisters (Lillian (Orvin) Fossen, Hilda (Melvin) Djoseland, Inez (Robert) Steinmetz, Jeanette (Donald) Knote, & brother–in-law John Chrissis.

Celebration of Life service: Friday, July 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Funeral and Burial services: Saturday, July 13 at 1:00 p.m. at South Viking Church, rural Maddock.
Vistation:  Thursday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Condolences may be sent to Noran Olson at: 10151 11th Avenue SE, Minot, ND 58701.

MessageI am Sidney's cousin (his Mom, Alice and my mother, Minnie were sisters).
I met Arnie very briefly at Marion's funeral.

My sincere sympathy to you all. Mavis was a very pleasant, hard working gal.

May God comfort you.
