Oscar Corum

Oscar Emil Corum, 78, Minot, died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 in a Minot Hospital

Oscar was born April 8, 1934 on the family farm in Horseshoe Valley Township near Ruso, North Dakota, the son of Arvie and Olga (Hagen) Corum. He attended Horseshoe Valley Township  School and went to work for the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad in 1951. 

Oscar returned to Minot in 1952, and went to work for Struksnes Construction Company until he was drafted into the Army in 1953. He honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1955. Oscar was united in marriage to Donna Fitzpatrick in 1957.  From this union they had five children, Patrick, Timothy, Richard, Robin and AJ. Donna died in 1978.  

Throughout the years, Oscar worked as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry for various area companies. Oscar and Donald Noack started General Dragline in Minot in 1975, and this business later became known as the Oscar Corum Company. Oscar was united in marriage to Roxanne Rasmuson on August 6, 1996. They continued to make Minot their home throughout the years. 

Oscar had a passion for racing and was an active member and participant at the Nodak Speedway. He won a number of awards, most prominently the 1960 Class A Season Championship, as well as the 1966 State Super Sprint title. He was inducted into the Nodak Racing Hall of Fame. Oscar was also an avid Nascar fan. He enjoyed several adventurous fishing trips to Canada with George Kemper and other friends throughout the years.  He was a member of the Minot American Legion and Moose Lodge.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Roxanne, along with his grandson, Adam Corum, Sioux Falls, SD, brother, Loren Corum Grafton, ND, mother-in-law, Phyllis Abrahamson, Minot, step-sons, Shawn (Kimberly) Rasmuson, Baldwin, WI & Scott Rasmuson, Minot; step-grandchildren, Brayden, Cole, Trey and Isabella; several nieces and nephews.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Donna, children, AJ, Robin, Tim, Pat and Richard; sister, Kathy Rock, step-daughter, Robin Rasmuson & father-in-law, Melvin Abrahamson.

Funeral service: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
Visitation: Monday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
